Wild Irish Rose Wine
This was filmed in New York when I was 24, for Wild Irish Rose Wine. The alto player in the commercial is the late, great Eddie Barefield, who was known for his work with Bennie Moten, Fletcher Henderson, Don Redman, and Coleman Hawkins. The audition was a cattle call - there must have been about 40 saxophonists of different ages, shapes and colors in the waiting room. I knew many of them, but not Eddie, with whom I was arbitrarily paired up for the audition. We had such a great chemistry. And he had the greatest smile. When we finished the audition, it was pretty clear by the glances around the room that they had found their pair.
